Updated:2008-09-15 16:45:15

(BEIJING, September 15) -- Germany's victory over Japan in the classification game for fifth-eighth place held on Monday, September 15, sent them into the classification play-off game for fifth-sixth place against Israel.

Germany beats Japan 71-57

German forward/guard Dirk Passiwan and center Dirk Kohler-Lenz combined for 53 points. Germany maintained a steady offensive momentum throughout the game, but overpowered Japan in the fourth quarter in which Germany outscored 22-14. Germany also gained 14 points from Japan's 12 turnovers.

Center Reo Fujimoto scored 20 points for his team, but only one other Japanese player scored in the double digits.

"We lost to Japan in the preliminary [group A game on Monday, September 8]. But this time our defense and shooting were better," said Passiwan. "We pressed them more so we could shoot more. Our big center also played very well. All these things are very important, and it's great for us to win the game."

The classification play-off game for fifth-sixth place will take place on Tuesday at the National Indoor Stadium.
